Yoga & Mood
Did you ever wonder why you feel better after yoga? Here is part of the answer.
Yoga appears to improve mood through increased activity of an amino acid neurotransmitter known to influence mood, anxiety and sleep. Investigators have found that yoga was associated with improved mood and increased levels of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in patients with major depressive disorder.
Studies show that the increase in GABA levels after a yoga session are ‘time-limited,’ similar to that of medication, such that completing one session of yoga per week may maintain elevated levels of GABA.
A number of medications that are commonly prescribed also act by increasing GABA. These include benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, Klonopin), and many of the prescription sleep aides (Ambien, Lunesta). Unfortunately, these medications have undesirable side effects and regular use leads to physical and psychological dependence with withdrawal symptoms if stopped abruptly. Although I can get cranky if I miss regular yoga practice, side effects are uncommon.
So, bottom line… yoga is a safe and effective way to reduce anxiety and depression by increasing brain GABA levels. Give it a try!
